Arthrology Of The Back Flashcards
What kind of joint is the C1/C2 vertebrae
Compound Synovial Joint
Planar & Trochoid
Which vertebrae are intervertebral joints & what kind
C3-S1: Symphysis
S5/Co1: Symphysis
Which vertebrae are zygopophyseal joint & what kind
C1-S1: compound Planar Synovial Joint
Result in excessive stretching and tearing of the anterior longitudinal l.
Head & neck injury
Hyperextension/“whiplash” injury
Importance of Anterior Longiitudinal L.
Important due to its possible splinting action that should be used whenever fracture of vertebral column is suspected
When a fracture of the vertebral column is occurs patient should be kept in hyperextension
Pull of anterior longitudinal l. Will help realign fragments of bone & keep further injury to the spinal cord from occurring,.
Occurs postlaterally where the annulus fibrosis receives no support from the anterior and posterior longitudinal l.
Resultant bulge compress spinal nerve roots, the cauda equina & ispinal nerves in vertebral canal & intervertebral foramina
Most common at L4/5 & L5/S1 (discs are larger & more mobile)
Herniation of Nucleus Pulposus
Describe Herniation of Nucleus Pulposus
Occurs postlaterally where the annulus fibrosis receives no support from the anterior and posterior longitudinal l.
Resultant bulge compress spinal nerve roots, the cauda equina & ispinal nerves in vertebral canal & intervertebral foramina
Most common at L4/5 & L5/S1 (discs are larger & more mobile)
Second # Rule
For cervical & lumbar regions, the vertebral level at which the prolapse occurs will affect the spinal nerve with 2nd #
I.e prolapse at C5/6 will affect spinal nerve 6
Prolapse at L4/L5 will affect spinal nerve 5
What kind of joint is the atlantooccipital joint?
Location?
Condyloid Synovial joint

What kind of joint is the lateral atlantoaxial joint?
Location>?
Planar Synovial Joint
Between superior & inferior articulating processes of the atlas & axis
Cervical intervertebral joint between the uncinate process of the inferior vertebra & inferior surface of the superior vertebra
Uncovertebral joint (of Luschka)
What kind of joint is the lumbosacral joint?
Location?
Compound joint: symphysis & Planar synovial
Between L5 & Sacrum
