Arteries brain (38-47) Flashcards
Which parts/areas of the brain are supplied by the anterior cerebral artery?;
Frontal lobe and anterior paritel lobe
What is the functional deficit in an anterior cerebral artery stroke?;
Contralateral hemiparesis and hemisensory loss of the lower extremity. Loss of executive function.
Which parts/areas of the brain are supplied by the middle cerebral arterty?;
Temporal and parietal lobe including broca & wernikes areas (in dominant sphere)
What is the functional deficit in a middle cerebral artery stroke?;
Contralateral (unilateral) weakness in upper limb and face. Contralateral homoynsus hermianpia. Speech deficits if dominant hemisphere affected. Neglect is non-dominant hemisphere affected.
Which parts/areas of the brain are supplied by the posterior cerebral artery?;
Occipital lobe & posterior part of thalmus, midbrain
What is the functional deficit in a posterior cerebral artery stroke?;
Visual disturbance, contralateral homonysus hemianopia, macular sparring. Occulomotr & trochlear nerves may also be affected as nerves from midbrain.
Which parts/areas of the brain are supplied by the vertebral artery?;
Brainstem (pons & medulla), upper spinal cord, cerebellum
What is the functional defecit in a stroke affecteing the vertebral artery?;
CN 6-12, vagus nerve most commonly affected - dysphonia, dusphagia, dysarthia - poor prognosis.
What is the aetiology of a subarachnoid haemorrhage;
Rupturped berry aneurysm (most commonly - 85%), can get spontaneous SAH or traumatic but is uncommon
Name three key signs and symptoms in a patient with a subarachnoid haemorrhage?;
Sudden “thundercalp” headache, photophobia, convulsions, N&V, papillodema
