Arteries Flashcards

Q
Elastic arteries
Muscular arteries
Arterioles
A
- E.g. aorta, common carotid.
- Conducting arteries – withstand pressure change due to elastic fibres to maintain blood flow
- Thick tunica media, elastic fibres, less smooth muscle tissue.
- ^2.5 diameter.
- e.g. brachial, femoral and named arteries.
- Distributing arteries – blood to muscles/organs. Vasodilate/constrict.
- No elastic fibres, smooth muscle tissue in tunica media, distinct elastic layers (external and
internal) , thick tunica externa. - 0.5mm – 0.4cm.
- Resistance vessels – vasoconstriction/dilation.
- 1-2 layers of smooth muscle cells in tunica media, poorly defined tunica externa.
