progressive reformers and the federal government addressed many issues needing reformation with national acts and policies but did fail with advancing race reform and womens suffrage.
contextualization
in the decades following the civil war and subsequent reconstruction attempt, national politics were relatively peaceful which was the calm before the storm because of the panic of 1893.
the panic of 1893
an economic disaster caused by the over expansion of railroads in the 1880s and that shaped the politics of the years to come. The panic opened the floodgates to all the issues that had been hiding behind the superficial gold glitter of the gilded age.
