Juan Ponce de Leon

Henry Hudson
During the 1600s, the Netherlands sponsored him, an english sailor, to seek westward passage to Asia, as the government had been sponsoring voyages of exploration at that time. In 1609, while searching for a northwest passage, Hudson sailed up a broad river that was later named Hudson river after him.This expedition is what established Dutch claims to the surrounding area, New Amsterdam (and later New York).
John Cabot
In the early 1600s, England was in a position to colonize the lands explored a century earlier by him.
Joint-stock companies
The English used these to finance risky enterprises of colonization to begin settling colonies in the Americas.
