How did Native Americans respond to European colonization?

a. Cause of the conflict?
bacon, a poor farmer, and others resented the control exercised by a few large planters in the Chesapeake area. so he raised an army of volunteers and, in 1676, conducted a series of raids and massacres against American Indian villages on the frontier, including some who had friendly relationships with the colonial government.

What was the encomienda system?
o control the surviving American Indians after most had died from diseases, the spanish used this system in which Spain’s king granted natives who lived on a tract of land to individual Spaniards. theses Indians were forced to farm or work in the mines. the fruits of their labors went to the Spanish, who in turn had to “care” for the Indians.

in religion, Spain’s roman catholic missionaries followed an aggressive, sometimes harsh, program to convert native Americans to christianity. the pressure of these Indians united against the spanish.

Hundreds of people died and the Spanish were driven from the area. When the Spanish returned in 1692 and regained control, they made some accommodations for the American Indians in the region. By ruling less harshly, the Spanish found greater stability.
