What is appraisal?
Appraisal occurs when the performance of an employee is reviewd. Appraisals can be useful to either identify high performance employees that could be potential candidates for leadership or manager roles. Or, identify areas where additional training and support is needed.
Features of Inspection
- One way Communication
- Negative: Only focuses on what the employees have failed to do and the targets they haven’t met.
- Managers review and make judgements of the employee’s performance based on their observation.
Features of Appraisal
- Communication is two way
- Fosters a positive and inclusive enviorment
- Non-judgemental, non-theatning and supportive
- Constructive feedback
For employees, appraisal can
- Motivating
- Instructive: Employees can learn from their past mistakes
- Help them progress along their career path
- Lead to a change in their career direction
For businesses, appraisal can
- Useful to record and document performance
- Be motivating as it formally recognizes good performance.
- Act as a check on performance
- Help to review initiatives
Formative Appraisal
It is focused on providing ongoing feedback to employees throughout the year. Managers provide feedback to employees as they’re working to help them improve their performance overtime.
This type of appraisal ‘forms’ the employee.
Summative Appraisal
This type of appraisal occurs at the end of a project, contract or specific goal. It is a formal and documented evaluation of employee’s performance. This type of appraisal tests employees knoledge and skills and then comapres them to a set of standards to measure their performance.
360 Degree Appraisal
Occurs when an employee recieves input from all categories (co-workers, subordinates, managers, costumers, clients etc) whom the employee interacts with.
Because this process is comprehensive and expensive, usually only senior managers recieve it.
Self Appraisal
Occurs when an employee evaluates their own performance. Employees rate themselves on various performance indicators.
Employees can discuss their acomplishments, weaknesses and any potential problems.
