Secretes oily matter (sebum) which lubricates hair shaft
Controls moisture loss
Waterproofs and lubricates skin
Protection from fungal infection
Apocrine sweat glands
Develop as part of pilosebaceous unit
Androgen dependent
Produce oily fluid which becomes an odour after bacterial decomposition

Genital areas and axillae
Eccrine sweat glands location
Palms of hands, soles, axillae
Eccrine sweat glands function
Secrete water to the skin surface in response to sympathetic NS detecting an increase in body temp
Leads to cooling by evaporation
moistens palms, softens soles of feet
