American Anti Slavery Society
Was an abolitionist society founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan
The American Anti Slavery Society dedicated itself to helping free slaves.
American Federation of Labor
A union of skilled laborers formed by Samuel Gompers in 1866
The American Federation of Labor was a major component of the Industrialization in America.
Christian Coalition
Nonprofit organization that serves as a powerful lobby for politically conservative causes, the coalition’s central goals have been to gain working control of the Republican Party through grassroots organizing and to elect Christian candidates to office
The Christian Coalition campaigned to get a Republican in office.
Civic Virtue
Standard of righteous behavior in relationship to a citizen’s involvement in society
They believed that civic virtue would be forming a Neighborhood Watch
Collective Good
Interest groups that are organized primarily for economic reasons but that engage in political activity in order to seek favorable policies from government
They believed that free healthcare would provide to the Collective Good
Disturbance Theory
An organized group that tries to influence public policy
The interest group formed in response to changes in the political system which proves Disturbance Theory
Economic Interest Group
Interest groups that are organized primarily for economic reasons but that engage in political activity in order to seek favorable policies from government
The Economic Interest Group decided to help in the Democratic convention in a hopes to gain support from the party
Free Rider Problem
It is a market failure that occurs when people take advantage of being able to use a common resource, or collective good, without paying for it, as is the case when citizens of a country utilize public goods without paying their fair share in taxes
The Free Rider Problem puts off many people to social welfare systems
AFL-CIO
It’s the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of fifty-five national and international unions
The AFL-CIO has much influence in the nation
Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007
Lobbying reform banning gifts to members of Congress and their staffs, toughening disclosure requirements, and increasing time limits on moving from federal government to the private sector
The Honest Leadership and Open Government Act helped with the problem of bribing government officials.
Interest Group
A collection of people or organizations that tries to influence public policy
An Interest group was formed when the citizens became upset with the current systems in place.
Jerry Falwell
A Southern Baptist Minister who, in 1978, founded the conservative religious group the Moral Majority
Jerry Falwell would most likely support the Republican Party
Lobbying
The activities of a group or organization that seek to persuade political leaders to support the group’s position
The group began Lobbying for free health care.
Lobbying Disclosure Act
A 1995 federal law that employed a strict definition of lobbyist and established strict reporting requirements on the activities of lobbyists
The Lobbying Disclosure Act made it so Lobbyists needed to report their activities.
Lobbyist
Interest group representative who seeks to influence legislation that will benefit his or her organizations or client through political and/or financial persuasion
The Lobbyist were upset after the new bill was passed.
Marian Wright Edelman
A lawyer who in 1973 founded the Children’s Defense Fund to protect the rights of children, particularly those who are members of disadvantaged groups
Marian Wright Edelman wanted to help kids across the nation.
Moral Majority
A conservative religious interest group credited with helping to mobilize conservative Evangelical Christian voters from its founding in 1978 through the presidency of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989)
The Moral Majority helped get Ronald Reagan into Presidency.
National Association of Manufacturers
An organization founded in 1895 by manufacturers to combat the growth of organized labor
The National Association of Manufacturers wanted a resurgence of manufacturing in America.
National Rifle Association
The major gun-rights lobbying group in the United States, which opposes gun control and advances an expansive interpretation of the Second Amendment
The National Rifle Association is a big contributor to the Republican Party
Pat Robertson
A southern Baptist minister and television evangelist who ran for president in 1988 and in 1989 founded the conservative religious interest group the Christian Coalition
Pat Robertson lost the Presidency to Ronald Reagan
Patron
A person who finances a group or individual activity
The new organization needed Patrons to help fund it.
Pluralist Theory
The theory that political power is distributed among a wide array of diverse and competing interest groups
The varying number of lobbies and groups that have power in American Politics is proof of Pluralist Theory.
political action committee (PAC)
Officially recognized Fund-raising organization that represents interest groups and is allowed by federal law to make contributions directly to candidates’ campaigns
Political Action Committees help fun Presidential Campaigns and are responsible for a large number of donations.
Progressive Movement
A broad group of political and social activists from the 1890s to the 1920s who opposed corruption in government, supported regulation of monopolies, and sought improvement of socioeconomic conditions
The Progressive Movement saw a rise in a push for Woman’s suffrage
Public Interest Group
An organization that seeks a collective good that if achieved will not selectively and materially benefit group members
The Public Interest Group wanted what was best for the public as a whole.
Social Capital
cooperative relationships that facilitate the resolution of collective problems
The Social Capital is what makes or breaks a collective group.
The Grange
Founded in 1867 as an educational organization for farmers, evolved into the first truly national interest group by working to protect the political and economic concerns of farming communities and rural areas.
The Grange is a mainly agricultural based interest group.
Trade Association
a group that represents a specific industry
Trade Associations help create platforms that share the best industry practices.
Transactions Theory
The theory that public policies are the result of narrowly defined exchanges or transactions among political actors
Transaction Theory stresses the importance of companies in the market economy.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
A major pro-business lobbying group founded in 1912
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce usually support Republican candidates
Women’s Christian Temperance Union
A public interest group created in 1874 with the goal of outlawing the sale of liquor. Its activities included prayer groups, protest marches, lobbying, and the destruction of saloons
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union was one of the first organizations of women dedicated to social reform.
