administrative adjudication
a quasi-judicial process in which a bureaucratic agency settles disputes between two parties similar to the way courts resolve disputes.
the judge used the administrative adjudication for the case.
administrative discretion
the ability of bureaucrats to make choices concerning the best way to implement congressional or executive intentions.
sentence: the public official has administrative discretion when making a decision.
cabinet departments
major administrative units with responsibility for a broad area of government operations. departmental status usually indicates a permanent national interest in a particular governmental function, such as defense, commerce, or agriculture.
sentence: certain people in the cabinet departments have different rules.
civil service system
the merit system by which many federal bureaucrats are selected.
sentence: many employees should know each other in the civil service.
department of homeland security
cabinet department created after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to coordinate domestic security efforts

federal bureaucracy
the thousands of federal government agencies and institutions that implement and administer federal laws and programs.

federal register
the official journal of the federal government of the US that contains government agency rules, proposed rules, and public notices.

great depression
the longest and deepest setback the American economy has ever experienced . It began with the stock market crash on October 24, 1929, and did not end until the start of World War II

G.I. bill
federal legislation enacted in 1944 that provided college loans for returning veterans and reduced mortgage rates to enable them to buy homes.
sentence: if the veterans needed the were able to use the G.I. bill.
government corporations
A government agency that operates like a business corporation, created to secure greater freedom of action and flexibility for a particular program.
sentence: government corporations are everywhere.
great society
reform program begun in 1964 by president Lyndon b. Johnson that was a broad attempt to combat poverty and discrimination through urban renewal, education reform, and unemployment relief.
sentence: great society was to eliminate poverty.
hatch act
a congressional law that forbade government officials from participating in partisan politics and protected government employees from being fired on partisan grounds; it was revised in 1993 to be less restrictive

implementation
the process by which a law or policy is put into operation
sentence: every law has been used due to implementation
independent executive agencies
governmental units that closely resemble a cabinet department but have narrower areas of responsibility and perform services rather than regulatory functions.
sentence:the independent executive agencies have less responsibilities than the cabinet.
independent regulatory commission
an entity created by congress outside a major executive department that regulates a specified interest or economic activity.
sentence: independent regulatory commission protects people in the economy
