functional fixedness
the tendency to perceive an item only in terms of its most common use
confirmation bias
tendency to search for information that confirms a personal bias
belief perseverance
our tendency for one’s preexisting beliefs to distort logical reasoning sometimes by making invalid conclusions
p value
used for experiments, less than 5% = confident that independent variable shows statistical significance
r value
correlation, -1 = negative correlation direction, 1 = positive correlation direction, predicting one another
confounding variable
a factor other than the independent variable
frontal lobe
behind forehead, involved with speaking, muscle movements, and making plans/judgements (motor cortex)
