Waste management is the process involving reduction of the amount of unwanted or unusable resources produced by a business in an attempt to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
What are the strategies to minimise waste?
Reduce, reuse and recycle.
What is reduce?
Reduce is achieved by creating less waste.
How can a business use just in time to reduce waste?
- Reduce storage costs and lessen risk of waste occurring in storage as work in progress and finished products can be kept at a minimum.
How can a business use the quality management system to reduce waste?
- Reduce amount of waste generated and rectify issues in production to further reduce waste in the future.
How can a business use robotics or automated production lines to reduce waste?
- By removing human involvement, process will not generate human errors thus reducing waste at its source.
What are advantages of reduce?
- Lower cost of production as less inputs required
- More efficient use of employees time, not needing to dispose or clean up waste
- Lead to positive reputation (CSR)
What are disadvantages of reduce?
- Substantial investment in training and time to implement
- Can take away focus of completing normal business functions
What is reuse?
Reuse refers to making multiple uses of items that would otherwise have been discarded.
How can a business use glass bottles to reuse?
Bottles can be returned to the business and be cleaned to reuse the bottles.
How can a business use ceramic cups to reuse?
Business can clean and reuse cups from dine in customers.
How can a business use materials to reuse?
if an input can be reused it can generate a second income for the business.
What are the advantages of reuse?

- Can lead to reduction in quality compared to normal inputs

Recycling refers to the transformation of discarded materials into new products to avoid waste.

Ensures the process of recycling is continued from one business to another.
How can a business use paper, glass, plastic and aluminium materials to recycle?
Materials can be reused to produce more product.
How can a business avoid buying hazardous non-recyclable materials to recycle?
Limits waste and promotes effective recycling process.
