What is training?
Training is the process of improving an employees skills and knowledge so they can perform their job more effectively and efficiently.
- training needs analysis can be conducted to assess the needs of the business, each job and individual employees and determine the training that is required
Purpose of training for employees
- Improved abilities
- Increased job satisfaction/motivation
- Improved self-esteem
- Can take on greater responsibility
Purpose of training for business
- Improved productivity
- Greater ability to meet business objectives
- Improved quality
- Reduced staff turnover
What is on the job training?
On the job training is where an employee learns skills and knowledge at their workplace, often while performing their actual job.
- Training is often conducted by an experienced employee
- Mentoring and job rotations
What are the advantages of on the job training?
- Employees gain experience on the equipment they will be working on
- Most cost- effective training
- Employee can work while being trained, more productive
What are the disadvantages of on the job training?
- Quality of trainer can vary (may not be an experienced trainer)
- Poor habits can be passed on
- May disrupt the operations while training is conducted
- If experienced employee is the trainer they are unable to perform their duties
What is off the job training ?
Off-the-job training is where the employee learns new skills away from the workplace
- Can include conferences, classroom setting (TAFE or universities) simulations or role playing.
What are advantages of off the job training?
- Learn from specialist with vast experience
- Less interruptions from workplace issues
- Can provide formally recognised qualifications
What are disadvantages of off the job training?
- Often most expensive form of training
- May not learn on exact equipment that will be used in workplace
- Employees may use gained qualifications to get a new job
- Lost working time as employee is away from work
