AOS 2 - Fore, mid, and hind brain Flashcards
What is the role of the hindbrain?
Coordinates basic survival functions
3 Primary structures of the hindbrain?
- Cerebellum
- Medulla
- Pons
What are 3 functions of the cerebellum?
Coordinating voluntary movements
Balance
Learning when motor skills are important (riding a bike)
What are the functions of the medulla?
3 points
Connects spinal cord to the brain
autonomic functions (breathing and swallowing)
Damage can be fatal
What are the functions of Pons?
Connects the cerebral cortex and cerebellum
Involved in sleep, arousal, facial expressions
What is the role of the midbrain?
Relays info between other brain regions, and between the brain and spinal cord.
Involved with movement, sleep and processing of our sensory
information.
What is the reticular formation?
Network of neurons that runs through the midbrain, hindbrain, and forebrain.
What are 2 main roles of the reticular formation?
Helps to maintain consciousness.
Screens incoming sensory information, so that the brain doesn’t overload.
What is the reticular activating system?
What does it do?
Extends in all different directions from the reticular formation.
Regulates physiological arousal and alertness.
What is the role of the forebrain?
Coordinates sophisticated mental processes and complex functions (memory and learning)
3 Primary structures of the forebrain?
- Cerebrum
- Hypothalamus
- Thalamus
What are the 2 main functions of the cerebrum?
Directs conscious motor activities
Receives + processes sensory information
What are the 2 main functions of the hypothalamus?
Regulates the release of hormones from different glands around the body.
Maintains a consistent body temperature.
What are the 2 main functions of the thalamus?
(Functions are connected)
Receives information from sensory organs (apart from the nose)
Sends the information to the relevant part of the brain for processing
