What are perceptual distortions?
when individuals perceptual interpretation of stimulus varies from how it is commonly perceived.
Can healthy individuals have distortions of their perception of taste and vision?
yes.
What is synaesthesia?
rare condition in which certain sensations are perceived using another system.
Two types of synaesthesia?
- grapheme-colour synaesthesia
- lexical-gustatory synaesthesia
What is grapheme-colour synaesthesia?
association of written letters and numbers with colours.
What is lexical-gustatory synaesthesia?
association of certain words with sensations of taste.
What is spacial neglect?
condition involving an inability to attend to sensory stimuli on one side of the body.
How can spacial neglect distort perception?
3 examples.
inability to perceive part of their world means they can be prone to accidents.
may overlook dressing part of their body.
not perceive part of a meal and thus not eat it.
