AOS 2 CHP 9 - Sensation and perception Flashcards
What is sensory stimuli?
raw pieces of information that are detected by the five senses.
What is sensation?
process of receiving and detecting raw sensory stimuli via sensory organs, and sending this information to the brain.
What is perception?
process of selecting, organising, and interpreting sensory information.
What is the process of processing visual sensation?
3 steps
- reception (receiving sensory info)
- transduction (info converted to neural impulse)
- transmission (info is sent to brain)
What is the process of visual perception?
3 steps
- selection (certain info is attended to, others ignored)
- organisation (stimuli attended to is regrouped)
3.interpretation (organised info to have meaning assigned)
What are 3 factors contributing to visual perception?
the eye
neurons
the brain (primary visual cortex)
How does the eye process light?
light enters eye through pupil,
focused through lens, onto the retina (retina contains photoreceptors)
PHOTORECEPTORS
What are rods?
Located where?
allow vision on low levels of light
outer edges of retina
PHOTORECEPTORS
What are cones?
Located where?
allow colour vision + fine details in bright light
centre of the retina
What is the primary visual cortex responsible for?
Which lobe is it located in?
interpreting and processing visual info recieved from eyes
occipital lobe
