AOS 2 CHP 9 - Biological factors of visual and gustatory perception Flashcards
2 Biological factors that influence visual perception?
- colour blindness
- depth perception
How does colour blindness influence visual perception?
Prevents individual from being able to distinguish between certain colours, changing their perception of the world.
What is depth perception?
What does it rely on?
The ability to judge distances and see the world in three dimensions.
ability to correctly process biological depth cues.
What are biological depth cues?
What are the two types of biological depth cues?
physiological signal which helps us determine how near or far an object is from another object or ourselves.
binocular and monocular.
What are binocular depth cues?
require both eyes to send information to the brain to perceive depth.
BINOCULAR DEPTH CUES
What is convergence?
What activities do we use it for?
ability to turn both eyes inward toward each other to look at a close object.
near-work activities (desk work at school)
BINOCULAR DEPTH CUES
What us retinal disparity?
difference between the view that each eye receives of a given object or scene.
What are monocular depth cues?
only require one eye to send information to the brain to perceive depth.
MONOCULAR DEPTH CUES
What is accomodation?
processes where lens changes shape in order to bring an object in focus on the retina
MONOCULAR DEPTH CUES
What is motion parallax?
influences how we judge relative distance
causes closer objects to appear to move faster, further objects appear slower.
3 Biological factors that effect gustatory perception?
age and genetics
illness
pregnancy
How do age and genetics effect gustatory perception?
2 points
likely to have a different number of taste buds to someone else
number of taste buds will change as we age.
How does illness effect gustatory perception?
2 points
brain is not receiving the full range of sensations that combine to give food its flavour (lost sense of smell)
results in food tasting different (bland)
How does pregnancy effect gustatory perception?
2 points
can be a biological change in taste during pregnancy
pregnant ppl are very sensitive to smells and tastes
