Adverse Reactions

A

-agranulocytosis = increased risk of infection
-drug induced hepatitis: monitor liver values

Uses

A

-hyperthyroidism
-thyrotoxicosis
-graves disease (autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism)
-used before thyroidectomy

Patient Education

A

-may take 1-2 weeks to see full effect
-report signs of hypothyroidism (bradycardia, weight gain, lethargy, cold intolerance, depression)
-report s&s of infection to HCP
-do not stop!! could cause thyroid storm

Pregnancy Considerations

A
  • use with caution during pregnancy bc it can cause hypothyroidism in fetus
  • if necessary, propylthiouracil is preferred (does not cross placenta)
