Olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine, clozapine, amisulpride, aripiprazole
side effects of atypical antipsychotics
metabolic syndrome, weight gain
elderly- increase risk of stroke (esp olanzapine and risperidone), increased risk of VTE
decreased seizure threshold
clozapine
significant risk of agranulocytosis- FBC monitoring is essential during treatment
typical antipsychotics
clorpromazine, thioridazine, haloperidol, zuclopentixol, fluphenazine
extrapyramidal side effects of typical antipsychotics
Parkinsonism
acute dystonia- eg torticollis, oculogyric crisis
akathisia
tardive dyskinesia
other side effects of typical antipsychotics
antimuscarinic- dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, constipation
sedation, weight gain
increased prolactin- galactorhoea, impaired glucose tolerance
neuroleptic malignant syndrome
decreased seizure threshold (greater with atypical)
prolonger QT (esp halloperidol)
most popular drug for treatment resistant schizophrenia
clozapine
