What are the clinical uses of sulfonamides?
A
- Used with trimethoprim → bactrim
- Covers many positives, negatives, and nocardia but does not cover pseudomonas and bacteroides
- Used for UTIs and pneumocystis pneumonia

A
Used in mycobacterium leprae and P. jirovecii when used with TMP

What are the clinical uses of trimethoprim?
A
- Used with SMX to make bactrim
- Used for UTIs, shigella, salmonella, P. jirovecii, PNA tx and prophylaxis, and toxoplasma prophylaxis

What are the clinical uses of fluoroquinolones?
A
- Very good gram negative coverage
- Most reliable pseudomonas coverage
- Some gram + infections
- Good for otitis externa

A
Good coverage of anaerobes below the diaphragm:
- Clostridium
- Bacteroides
- Part of H. pylori treatment
- Gardnerella vaginalis
- Trichomonas
- Entamoeba
- Giardia
