Antimicrobial Chemotherapy 3 Flashcards
What has no action against fungi?
Most antibiotics
What are the classes of anti-fungal drugs?
Polyenes
Azoles
Allylamines
Echinocandins
How do polyenes act?
Bind to ergosterol in fungal cell wall and creates a pore
Also binds to other sterols such as cholesterol so are toxic
Why are polyenes toxic?
They bind to sterols such as cholesterol
What are examples of polyenes?
Amphotericin B
Nystatin
How do azoles act?
Inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol
What are examples of azoles?
Fluconazole
Itraconazole
Voriconazole
How do allylamines act?
Supress ergosterol synthesis but act at a different stage of the pathway than azoles (act earlier)
What is an example of an allylamine?
Terbinafine
How do echinocandins act?
Inhibit the synthesis of glucan polysaccharide
What are examples of echinocandins?
Caspofungin
Micafungin
Anidulafungin
How would you describe the number of viral diseases that are treatable?
Few are treatable
What is there none of in terms of treating viruses?
Virucial agents (kill the virus)
What do virucial agents do?
Kill the virus
What do virustatic agents do?
Inhibit the growth
