Antidiarrheals Mechanism of Action Flashcards
Loperamide
Inhibits presynaptic cholinergic nerves in the myenteric and submucosal plexi, leading to increased transit time and water absorption
Diphenoxylate
Inhibit presynaptic cholinergic nerves in myenteric and submucosal plexi, leading to increased transit time and water absorption
CNS effects
Cholestyramine
Bile salt sequestrant
Binds excess bile acids, decreasing secretory diarrhea
Colestipol
Bile acid sequestrant
Bismuth subsalicylate
Subsalicylate decreases prostaglandins and chloride secretion
Crofelemer
Inhibits cAMP stimulated CFTR and calcium activated CL channels on luminal membrane
Octreotide
Similar actions to somatostatin
Reduces intestinal, pancreatic and gallbladder secretion
Slows motility
Reduces splanchnic blood flow
