antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis Flashcards
1
Q
mechanism of action
A
antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis do so by binding to bacterial ribosomes, usually protein synthesis can resume when the antibiotic is removed so they are bacteriostatic
2
Q
bacteriostatic means
A
inhibits bacterial growth but does not kill the bacteria, the bacteria are killed by white blood cells
3
Q
the exception to antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis being bacteriostatic
A
is the amino glycoside group (gentamicin) where the binding of the antibiotic to the ribosome is lethal
4
Q
examples of antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis
A
- macrocodes
- amino glycosides
- clindamycin
- chloramphenicol
- tetracyclines (doxycycline)
