antibiotics Flashcards
Goal of antibiotic therapy
Decrease the population of the invading bacteria to a point where the human immune system can effectively deal with the invader.
Gram-positive bacteria
The cell wall retains a stain or resists decolorization with alcohol
Gram negative
The cell wall loses a stain or is decolorized by alcohol.
Aerobic
Depend on oxygen for survival
Anaerobic
Do not use oxygen
Aminoglycosides (gentamicin)
powerful antibiotics used to treat serious infections caused by gram negative aerobic bacilli. Have serious adverse effects.
Indications of Aminoglucosides (gentamicin)
Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Action of Aminoglucosides (gentamicin)
In habits protein synthesis in susceptible strains of gram negative bacteria causing cell death.
Pharmacokinetics of Aminoglucosides
poorly absorbed from the GI tract, but rapidly absorbed via IM injection reaching peak within 1 hour.
Contraindications of aminoglycosides
known allergy, renal or hepatic disease, hearing loss, active herpes or mycobacterial infection, myasthenia graves or parkinonsim, lactation.
Adverse effects of ahminoglycosides
Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity are the most significant.
Drug to drug interactions of aminoglycosides
penicillins, cephalosporins, diuretics, neuromuscular blockers, succinylcholine, or citrate anticoagulated blood.
Macrolide ATBs (erythromycin)
characterized by molecules made up of large ring lactose. Macrolide are bacteriostatic or bactericidal in susceptible bacteria.
Indications of Macrolide (erythromycin)
Treating legionnaire disease, mycoplasma pneumonia pneumonia, diphtheria, chlamydial infections and chancroid.
Pharmacotherapeutics of macrolide
drug is easily inactivated by gastric acid. Peak 1-4 hours metabolized liver and excreted urine and bile.
