Anterior Abdominal Wall Muscles Flashcards
Where are the Origins of the Transverse Abdominis?
Thoracolumbar Fascia and the cartilage of the lower six ribs and iliac crest
Where is the Insertion of the Transverse Abdominis?
Linea Alba
What Joints does the Transverse Abdominis cross?
Intervertebral joints of lumbar vertebrae
What are the Actions of the Transverse Abdominis?
Compression of abdominal cavity and increasing abdominal pressure. Stabilises lumbar spine by creating tension through the TFL and increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP).
Where are the Origins of the Rectus Abdominis?
Pubis and Symphysis Pubis
Where are the Insertions of the Rectus Abdominis?
Cartilages of ribs 5-7 & base of Sternum
What Joints does the Rectus Abdominis cross?
Intervertebral joints of lumbar & thoracic vertebrae
Wat is the Action of the Rectus Abdominis?
Flection of the vertebral column
Where is the Origin of the External Obliques?
Outer surface of the bottom 8 ribs
Where are the Insertions of the External Obliques?
Mainly Linea Alba, also Iliac Crest
What joints do the External Obliques cross?
Bilaterally: flexion of the vertebral column and tilts the pelvis posteriorly. Unilaterally: rotation and lateral flexion (in combination with the internal obliques)
Where are the Origins of the Internal Obliques?
Thoracolumbar Fascia & the Iliac Crest
Where are the Insertions of the Internal Obliques?
Linea Alba & bottom three ribs
What joints do the Internal Obliques cross?
Intervertebral joints of the lumbar and lower thoracic vertebrae
What are the Actions of the Internal Obliques?
Bilaterally – flexion of the vertebral column. Unilaterally – rotation and lateral flexion (in combination with the external obliques). Stabilises lumbar spine by creating tension through the TLF
