Anterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
Boundaries of the abdominal wall
Superior, are the right and left costal margins, the inferior border is a line on either side connecting the ASIS to the pubic symphysis, lateral are vertebral lines from the ASIS and up on each side. The posterior boundary is the lumbar paravertebral musculature
Reference planes
subcostal plane, passes through the body of the L3
Transtubercular plane, passes through the iliac tubercles at the level of L5
Sagittal plane, mid clavicular line to the mid inguinal point.
Transpyloric plane
passes through the L1
What are the nine quadrants
the upper (R/L hypochondriac and Epigastric). The middle are the (R/L lumber and umbilical) and the lower (R/L inguinal and the hypogastric)
What organs are in the RUQ
the liver, gallbladder, R kidney and adrenal glands, and the ascending colon.
Organs in the LUQ
Spleen, stomach, pancreas (body and tail), L kidney
Organs in the RLQ
cecum, appendix, right ovary and ureter and most of the ileum
LLQ
sigmoid colon, descending colon, left ovary and ureter and left spermatic cord
Rectus Sheath
the dense fibers sheath around the rectus abdomens muscle. formed by the aponeuroses of the abdominal muscles
The abdominal wall is innervated by…
ventral primary rami of T6-T11
ventral primary ramps of T12
Subcostal nerve and iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves from ventral primary rami L1
What are the landmarks of innervation
T10 is the umbilical region
T7 diploid process
L1 public area
Arterial supply of the anterior abdominal wall
Superior epigastric (branched from the internal thoracic artery) and the inferior epigastric (branch of the external iliac)
Where do the inferior and superior epigastric enter?
they enter the rectus sheath posteriorly to the rectus abdomens and anastomoses with the rectus muscle
Where are some other sources of arterial supply to the anterior abdominal wall
posterior intercostal arteries and also direct branches of the abdominal aorta and the lumbar arteries.
