ANS Flashcards
Where would you find alpha-2 adrenoreceptors?
Presynaptic cells
Where would you find alpha-1 adrenoreceptors?
Blood vessels of the skin and GI tract
What does stimulation of alpha-1 receptors cause?
Vasoconstriction
What does stimulation of alpha-2 adrenoreceptors cause?
Inhibits the release of neurotransmitter
Where would you find ß-1 adrenoreceptors? What does stimulation of them cause?
In the heart
Increases rate and force of contraction
Where would you find ß-2 adrenoreceptors and what does stimulation of them cause?
Bronchial an uterine smooth muscle
(Relaxes muscles)
Blood vessels in skeletal muscle
(Vasodilation)
Name 2 alpha-1 agonists
Lidocaine and pseudo ephedrine
What does lidacaine do?
Alpha-1 agonist so vasoconstriction, used for injecting anaesthetics
What does pseudo ephedrine do?
Alpha-1 agonist
Constricts blood vessels in nose, used as a decongestant
Name an alpha-1 antagonist and it’s action
Doxazosin- treats hypertension by causing vasodilation
Also imported urinary flow in prostatic hyperplasia
Name an alpha-2 agonist and its action
Clonidine- treats hypertension
Name a ß-1 agonist and it’s effect
Dobutamine- acutely stimulates a failing heart but may disturb rhythm and decrease efficiency
Name a ß-1 antagonists and it’s effect
Propranolol- treats angina by improving oxygen to heart muscle , regulates dysrythmias
ß-2 agonists and effects
Isoprenaline- treats asthma regardless of stimulus
Salbutamol- used in COPD but doesn’t treat underlying inflammation
Also used to delay labour
Name a ß-2 antagonist and it’s effects
Propranolol- reduces heart output -> reduced hypertension (can’t be used in asthma sufferers who use agonist for relief)
