Is a disorder characterized by refusal to maintain a minimally normal body weight because of a disturbance in perception of the size or appearance of the body.
Anorexia Nervosa
Characteristics
*BMI under 17.50 or less than 85 % expected weight.
*Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat even though underweight.
*Severely distorted body image
*Refusal to acknowledge seriousness of weight loss
*Amenorrhea (in girls)
*Anorexia nervosa occurs most common in girls (90%), usually at puberty or during adolescence
*Between 13 and 20 years of age.
*Most common among sisters and daughters and mothers who also had the disorder.
*The disorder may be manifested as severe weight restriction controlled by limiting food intake or weight excessive exercise or by binge eating/ purging
metabolic and endocrine abnormalities result from malnutrition/starvation
Anorexia
potassium depletion and hypokalemia: related to purging, laxative, or diuretic abuse
Bulimia
HTN, cardiac problems, sleep apnea, mobility, diabetes

*Exercise- physical fitness not calories
*Cognitive behavioral interventions
*Body image interventions
*Family involvement
