Animal Taxa Flashcards
richness and abundance of taxa
Richness - there are many different taxa
Abundance - there are large numbers of non-human organisms
Why study non-human taxa?
• study disease • food source • medicine - leeches - inspiration for technological advancements
What kingdoms use the the organelles; chloroplast and mitochondria?
- Protista
- Plantae
only mitochondria
• Fungi
• Animalia
Heterotrophic vs autotrophic kingdom
Heterotrophic
• fungi
• animalia
Autotrophic
• protista (or heterotrophic)
• plantae
Acronym to remember taxonomy categories?
King penguins can only fly going south
- kingdom
- phylum
- class
- order
- family
- genre
- species
define species
a group of organisms that can mate with one another to produce fertile offspring
Writing genus and species
Genus should be capitalised and whole thing (both genus and species) underlined/italicised
Homo - genus
sapien - species
How do you determine if an organism is closely related?
- organisms of the same genus are closely related
* organisms that share a species name are not closely related (e.g. cuttlefish, fish not related)
Phylum porifera
- ‘pore bearing’ so sponge
* no symmetry
Phylum Cnidaria
‘stinging thread’ - jellyfish
- class cubozoa
- class hydrozoa
Class hydrozoa
- blue bottle jellyfish
- first aid - hot water
- single opening - mouth/anus
Class cubozoa
- first aid - vinegar or hot water
- complex lens eyes
- contain toxins
Diploblastic vs triploblastic
Diploblastic
- 2 cell layers
- cnidarians
- contain non-living layer, that consist of jelly, instead of mesoderm
Triploblastic
- three layered
- most animals
- has mesoderm
2 types of symmetry
- radial symmetry
* bilateral symmetry
Radial symmetry
• any plane along the main body axis
- cnidarians
