Animal Sleep Flashcards
1
Q
What is REM Sleep?
A
Fast, desynchronised rhythms in the electroencencephalogram, hippocamplal theta activity, rapid eye movements, autonomic activation and loss of postural muscle tone
2
Q
How is sleep measured?
A
- Polysomnography (EEG,EMG,EOG)
- Wrist actigraphy
- behavioural observations/ HRV
- Sleep diary
3
Q
Stages of Sleep?
A
- stage W (alert/drowsey)
- Stage 1 (nrem sleep)
- Stage 2 (nrem sleep)
- Stage 3 (nrem sleep)
- Stage 4 (nrem sleep)
(stages 1-4 = slow wave sleep) - Stage REM sleep
4
Q
What is the function of slow-wave sleep?
A
memory consoloidation, synaptic homeostasis, health
5
Q
Function of different types of sleep?
A
- resorative
- energy conservation
- immune function regulation
memory consolidation
-synaptic homeostasis
6
Q
What factors effect sleep?
A
- environment
- stress
(behavioural needs)
7
Q
How can reduced sleep be used as a marker for poor welfare?
A
Indicates stress and depression (rise in cortosone levels)
