Animal Scientfic Procedures Act Flashcards
Purpose of ASPA legislation?
- define legitimate purposes for animal use in science
-impose limits on pain and suffering - provide inspection of facilities and procedures
- humane standards of husbandry and car
- humane standards of hudbandr and care
-ensure public accountability
What are regulated procedures?
Any procedure that causes suffering, distress or lasting harm
What are non-regulated procedures
- non-experimental
- ringing, tagging or marking animals for identification only
- humane killing
What is the defination of living?
An animal shall be regarded as continuing to live until the perminant cessation of cirulation or the destruction
- as brain destruction is incomplete in de-cerebrate animals such as animals are considered to be living for the purposes of the Act and are therefore protected
Whast are banned activites?
- testing of finished consmetics/ ingreadients
- testing alchol or tabaco
- tesing offensive wepons
- re-use of animals (other than autherised)
Projects are only autherised if?
- no suitable althernatives
- number of nimals needed is recuced
-procedures must be rfied
How is the act utilitariam?
- benifits wieghed against costs
- based on likely outcomes (scientific quality, experimental design, minimum number of animals, lowest neuro-physiological sensitivity
Types of licences and certificates?
- personal licence
- project licence
- certificate of designation to head of organisation
(all three required in every case)
Whast is required for a personal licence?
- adequate training
- 18 or over
- specific conditions attached to licence
-primarily responcible for the animals un der their care
What is required for project licences?
- basic physiology or biology
- prevention, diagnosis or treatment of disease
- animal welfare
- toxilogical studies
- protection of environment
- education
- preserving rare species
-forensic enquires - breeding of animals for scientific use
neuromuscular blocking agents
What are thwe different severity limits?
- mild = may give rise to slight or transitory minor effects
- moderate = screening and developmentof pharmaceuticals
- sevre = protocols that result in majour departure from the animals usual state of wellbeing
What is humane killing?
- overdose of anastetic
- rising concentration of CO2
- dislocation of neck
- concussion
coptive bolt, free bullet, stunning and exsanguination
How are animals courced for scientific studies?
- from breeders with certificate of designation
- wild caught (only when no captive source)
- no endangered species unless (research is aimed at there survival, biomedicval)
- enuthinased at the end of procedured (unless not in opain and there is no lasting harm
