Abnormal Behaviour Flashcards
What are the four categories of abnormal behaviour?
- Neurological dysfunction
- Symptom of unknown clinical condition
- Stereotypy
- Learned
What are the symptoms of Neurological dysfunction?
- seizures
- visual dysfunction
- coma
- deafness
- lack of co-ordination
- sluggish posture
- head tilt and general asymmetry
- head pressing
Animals reaction to stress
Animals will often try and remove themselves from stress
What happens if an animal cannot limit stress?
They will often adopt strategies of counteraction
What is stereotypic behaviour?
Stereotypy is repetitive, invariant behaviour without obvious goal or function.
Behavioural model for stereotypy environment?
- specific stressors
- diurnal pattern of stereotypy performance
- Hughes and Duncan (1988) to explain the underlying motivation for behaviours
What are the specific stressors for abnormal development?
- restricted food supply
- restricted locomotion
-social isolation
What is the impact of diurnal pattern?
The majority of stereotypies are performed either in the context of external stimuli that indicate the arrival of food or, the act of feeding itself.
What does the Hughes and Duncan model suggest about stereotypic behaviours?
- are adaptive origin
- restrictive environments prevent consummatory behaviours
- The lack of negative feedback loop of motivation causes constant specific
What are the limitations of the Hughes and Duncan model?
stereotypies are not always performed in the context of food arrival or feeding
Motivation of stereotypy?
- level of motivation will determine the level of perpetuation within the loop
What causes the changes of dopamine?
- chronic stress
- psychostimulants
