Animal Reproduction and Development Flashcards
page 91-106
What is the difference between oviparous and viviparous reproduction?
Oviparous animals lay eggs; viviparous animals give birth to live young.
How do marsupials differ from placental mammals?
Marsupials give birth to underdeveloped young that continue to develop in a pouch.
What is external fertilization, and which animals use it?
Fertilization occurs outside the body, common in fish and amphibians.
What are the three stages of mammalian development
Zygote, embryo, and fetus.
How do monotremes reproduce?
They lay eggs but produce milk to feed their young.
What is the role of the placenta in mammals?
To provide oxygen and nutrients to the developing fetus and remove waste products.
How does the reproductive system of birds differ from that of mammals?
Birds have a cloaca for reproductive and excretory functions, and fertilization is internal but egg development occurs externally.
What is metamorphosis, and which animals undergo it?
A developmental process where an animal undergoes significant changes in form, e.g., insects (caterpillar to butterfly) or amphibians (tadpole to frog).
