Anemia Of Chronic Disease Flashcards
What’s another name of anemia of chronic disease?
Anemia of inflammation
When does it normally develop?
1-2 months of disease activity
What is anemia of chronic disease caused by? (5)
Cancer
Autoimmune & infectious disorders
( HIV, hepatitis, malaria )
Heart failure
Malignant disease
Bleeding episodes
What is anemia of chronic disease normally associated with? (2)
Underproduction of red blood cells & mild shortening of red blood cell Survival ( 90 day survival )
(normocytic, normochromic, and hyporpoliferative RBC)
Anemia is normally mild unless we don’t ____ then it becomes severe
We don’t treat the underlying disorder
Chronic is more than how many months?
6
When we see anemia, it may be an indication for this type of anemia of chronic disease ? True or false
True
How does anemia of chronic disease work? Pathophysiology? (4)
The cytokines ( interleukin) causes an increase uptake and retention of iron within macrophages
This uptake and retention of iron will lead to the diversion of of iron from circulating into storage sites
Limiting the iron available for RBC production
This decreased the RBC lifespan & Decreased erythropoietin production & ineffective bone marrow response
Anemia of chronic disease must be recognized and distinguished from anemia of other causes.
Findings
How can we do this or see this? (4)
High serum ferritin
Increase iron storages
Normal folate
Normal cobalamin blood levels
What is the best treatment?
Treat Underlying cause
What are other 2 methods of treatments?
Rarely blood transfusions
Conservative use of erythropoietin therapy
EPO therapy is limited because ?
The increase risk of thromboembolism ( blood clot ) and death in some patients
