Anemia Flashcards
Ischemia vs Anemia
Ischemia - particular to one organ only
Anemia - systemic
Production of Erythroid precursors cells that are defective
Ineffective erythropoiesis ( Megaloblastic anemia)
Decrease in the number of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow
Insufficient anemia (Aplastic anemia)
Used to assess the Bone marrow response
Reticulocyte count
The formula for Absolute Reticulocyte Count
(Retic% x RBC count) / 100
The formula for corrected reticulocyte count
CRC= Retic% x (Patient HCT/45)
Ovalocytes are only seen in
Megaloblastic anemia
Other term for sickle cells
Drepanocytes/ Meniscocytes
Hb C crystal
Bar of Gold / Washington monument
Hb SC crystal
Finger shaped
Target cells
Common finding in microcytic anemia’s
Target cells
—> Hollow pallor ( does not contain hemoglobin)
Poikilocyte associated in Kidney disease
Burr cells
–> if normal: Ecchinocytes
Poikilocyte that is seen in overproliferation of cells in the BM
Teardrop cells / Dacryocytes
Feature / sign of recovery from anemias
Reticulocytes
Helpful in assessing early bone marrow response after treatment for anemia
Immature reticulocyte fraction
Electrolyte imbalances often result to this type of poikilocyte
Stomatocytes
An iron binding protein in the granules of neutrophils. It’s affinity is greater than that of transferrin
Lactoferrin
Type of anemia wherein there is sideropenia in the face of abundant iron stores
Anemia of Chronic Inflammation
Type of anemia characterized by the prevention of the production of protoporphyrin or incorporation of iron into it
Sideroblastic anemia
The hallmark for sideroblastic anemia
Ring sideroblasts
Anemia characterized by accumulation of aminolevulinic acid (ALA), iron and protoporphyrin
Lead Poisoning
RPI that signifies bone marrow failure
<2 RPI
Most common drug and chemical associated with aplastic anemia
Drug: chloramphenicol
Chemical: benzene
The selective and severe disease in erythrocytes precursors
Pure Red Cell Aplasia
Congenital disease associated with Pure red cell aplasia
Diamond Blackfan Anemia
Most common aplastic anemia
Fanconi’s anemia
Common finding in pure red cell aplasia
Severe anemia and reticulocytopenia (decreased reticulocytes) with normal RBCs and Platelets
Anemia that exhibits hypercellular BM but ineffective erythropoiesis
Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia
Infiltration of abnormal cells into the BM and subsequent replacement of normal hematopoietic cells
Myelophthisic anemia
