Anatomy Unit 7: Part 1 Flashcards
What are the main functions of blood?
Transportation, Heat Distribution, and Fluid Regulation.
What are the 4 components of blood?
Red Blood cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, and Plasma.
What is another name for Red Blood Cells?
Erythrocytes.
What is another name for White Blood Cells?
Leukocytes.
What is another name for Platelets?
Thrombocytes.
What blood makes up the most percentage of the body?
Plasma at 55%.
What are the defining characteristics of Red Blood Cells?
They have no nucleus carry hemoglobin, and take a biconcave disc shape.
What molecule on Red Blood Cells functions in binding oxygen, and what color does it turn when it binds to oxygen?
Hemoglobin, which turns red once binded to oxygen.
What is hemoglobin mainly composed of?
Iron.
What is another name for White Blood Cells?
Leukocytes.
What is the main function of white blood cells?
To defend against diseases and other pathogens.
What is another name for Platelets?
Thrombocytes.
What specifically are Platelets?
Cell fragments that clog blood.
What is Plasma mainly composed of?
Water.
What are the main functions of Plasma?
To transport nutrients & gases, and regulate fluid & electrolyte balance.
What is agglutination?
The clumping of red blood cells.
What are Antigens?
Proteins found on the outside of blood cells.
What is the main function of Antigens?
To cause an immune response against a substance in the body.
Which Antigens determine blood type?
A, B, and Rh.
Which blood type is considered the universal receiver?
AB+
Which blood type is considered the universal donor?
O-
How does Rh factor impact blood type?
Rh determines if blood is positive or negative.
