Anatomy Unit 4: Bone Physiology Flashcards
Study for the Bone Physiology Test
What do ligaments connect?
Bone to bone
What do tendons connect?
Bone to muscle
What tissues are found in bones?
Bone, cartilage, dense connective tissue, blood, and nervous
What are the four functions of the bones?
Support/Protect, Attachment for muscles, make blood, & store inorganic salts (calcium) + Fat
What part of the body is Axial?
The skull, vertebral column, & rib cage
What part of the body is Appendicular?
The arms and the legs
What are some examples of long bones?
The limb bones except the patella, carpals, & tarsals
What are some examples of short bones?
Carpals & tarsals
What are some examples of flat bones?
Scapula, sternum, ribs, & most skull bones
What are some examples of irregular bones?
Vertebrae, hip, mandible, & maxilla
What is compact bone?
A densely packed bone tissue
What is spongy bone?
Irregular & interconnected channels with lots of space inside
What is the function of red marrow?
To make blood
What is the function of yellow marrow?
To store fat
Why is collagen important for bone?
For strength & resilience
Why is calcium important for bone?
It makes the bones more solid & resistant to crushing
What are the 2 ways that bones form?
Originating between layers of connecting or bone tissue replaces cartilage
What is ossification?
The formation of bone
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells
What is the function of osteoblasts?
To build bone matrix
What is the function of osteoclasts?
To cut down excess bone matrix?
What is epiphyseal plate?
Growth plate
What are 3 factors that influence bone development?
Nutrition, hormones, & exercise
What is hematopoiesis & where does it take place in bones?
Blood cell formation & in red marrow
