ANATOMY- The Pudendal Nerve Flashcards
Where does the PUDENDAL NERVE come from?
Sciatic Plexus
S2, S3, S4
Describe the Course of the PUDENDAL NERVE
1) Starts from Sciatic Foramen (S2,S3,S4)
2) Enters the GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN
3) Re-enters the Pelvis through the LESSER SCIATIC FORAMEN
4) Enters the PUDENDAL CANAL (ALCOCKS CANAL)
5) Divides into INFERIOR RECTAL NERVE and PERINEAL NERVE
6) Continues as the DORSAL NERVE OF THE PENIS/ CLITORIS
What other structures accompany the PUDENDAL nerve within the PUDENDAL CANAL?
PUDENDAL ARTERY
PUDENDAL VEIN
Where does the PUDENDAL ARTERY come from?
INTERNAL ILIAC ARTERY
Where does the PUDENDAL VEIN come from?
INTERNAL ILIAC VEIN
Where is the PUDENDAL CANAL found?
Lateral wall of the ISCHIORECTAL FOSSA
PUDENDAL CANAL
What does the INFERIOR RECTAL NERVE Supply?
MOTOR: External Anal Sphincter
SENSORY: Lower 1/3 of the anal canal and Perianal Skin
What does the PERINEAL NERVE Supply?
Innervation of the muscles of the Pelvic Floor and the EXTERNAL URETHRAL SPHINCTER
SENSORY: Skin of the Perineum, Labia, Scrotum
What does the DORSAL NERVE OF THE PENIS/ CLITORIS Supply?
SENSORY: Penis and Clitoris
Responsible for sensation associated with erection
THE PUDENDAL NERVE
What is the GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN?
Opening in the Posterior Pelvis
Allows the passage of Nerves and Blood Vessels
What are the Boundaries of the GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN?
Superior- Sacroiliac Ligament
Inferior- Sacrospinous Ligament
Anterolaterally: Greater Sciatic Notch
Posteromedially: Scarotuberous Ligament
GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN
What Muscle passes through the GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN?
Piriformis
