Anatomy Terminology Flashcards
What is the origin of the word “anatomy?”
Ana- up, Tome- To cut
Describe and demonstrate the anatomical position
A person standing upright, facing forward.
Arms straight and hands held by the hips, palms facing forward.
Feet parallel and toes pointing forward.
List and describe the three anatomical planes
- Sagittal plane – a vertical line which divides the body into a left section and a right section.
- Coronal plane – a vertical line which divides the body into a front (anterior) section and back (posterior) section.
- Transverse plane – a horizontal line which divides the body into an upper (superior) section and a lower (inferior) section.
Explain the term of location “medial”
Towards the midline
Explain the term of location ‘lateral’
away from the midline
Explain the term of location ‘anterior’
Towards the front
Explain the term of location ‘posterior’
Towards the back
Explain the term of location ‘superior’
Higher on the verticle axis
Explain the term of location ‘inferior’
Lower on the verticle axis
Explain the term of location “Proximal”
Closer to its origin
Explain the term of location “distal”
Further from its origin
Explain the terms of movement “flexion” and “extension”
Flexion- decreasing the angle of joints
Extension- Increasing the angle of joints
Explain the term of movement “medial rotation” and “lateral rotation”
Medial Rotation – rotational movement towards the midline
Lateral rotation- rotating movement away from the midline
Explain the terms of movement “elevation” and “depression”
Elevation- Movement in a superior direction (e.g. shrugging)
Depression- Movement in an inferior direction
Explain the terms of movement “pronation” and “supination”
Pronation- Turing the hand so it faces down
Supination- turning the hand so it faces upwards
