Anatomy/Physiology of the orbit and eye Flashcards
Where does the cornea get nutrition from?
Aqueous humour
Are there any blood vessels in the cornea?
No
What kind of epithelium is present in the cornea?
Stratified squamous non-keratinised
What is Bowman’s membrane?
Basement membrane of the corneal epithelium
What is the stroma?
A fibrous, tough, perfectly transparent layer of the cornea (thickest layer of the cornea)
What is the stroma composed of?
Regularly arranged collagen
Where does the descement membrane lie?
Between the stroma and the endothelial layer of the cornea
What is a function of the corneal endothelium?
Has a pump which keeps aqueous humour out of the cornea
What is aqueous humour?
The aqueous humour is a transparent, watery fluid similar to plasma, but containing low protein concentrations. It is secreted from the ciliary epithelium, a structure supporting the lens.
What is a benefit of the avascularity of the cornea?
Don’t have to check for antigen compatibility in donors
Where is the choroid plexus of the eye?
Between retina and sclera
Contains vasculature connective tissue
Are there any rods or cones on the optic nerve spot of the retina?
No
What name is given to the area of the retina with the highest density of cones and therefore maximum visual acuity?
Fovea centralis
Describe the lens.
Crystalline, bi-convex structure dividing the anterior and posterior segments of the eyeball which serves to focus light on the retina
What are the meibomian glands?
Exocrine glands along the inside of the eye lids inside the tarsal plate which produce meibum, an oily substance which prevents the evaporation of the tear film
