Sinuses
What is the mucosal lining of the nose?
Pseudo-stratified ciliated columnar with a squamous-columnar junction
What causes the nose to thrust out?
Septal cartilage
What causes the septal cartilage to deviate?
Trauma
Congenital
What is the function of the turbinates (Concha)?
Increase the surface area of the nasal cavity in order to warm and moisten air passing through the nose
What is used to treat swelling from rhinitis or infection?
Steroid sprays

What does the nasopharynx contain?
Eustachian tube openings
Adenoids
What arteries supply the nose and what is their origin?
Sphenopalatine artery – From maxillary branch of the external carotid system
Greater Palatine Artery and ascending labial
Ethmoid arteries from internal carotid system
Capillary plexus on mucosal lining of septum – Littles area
What nerve fibres supply the nose?
Olfactory nerve

Rhinitis
What is hyposmia?
Reduced ability to smell and detect odours
Where does the frontal sinus drain to?
Anterior cranial fossa
Where do the ethmoid sinuses drain to?
Anterior cranial fossa (Cribriform plate)
