What occurs in the oral cavity?
- Food is ingested and prepared for digestion in the stomach and small intestine
- Food and drinks are tasted
- Lingual manipulations of food occurs before deglutition is initiated
What two parts make up the oral cavity?
- Oral vestibule
- Oral cavity proper
What is the oral vestibule?
The space between the lips, cheeks and teeth and gums (gingivae)
Where is the oral cavity proper?
Between the upper and lower dental arches (maxillary and mandibular alevolar processes and the teeth they hold).
What is the roof off the oral cavity proper formed by?
The palate
What does the oral cavity communicate posteriorly with?
The oropharynx
What does the palate form?
The roof of the mouth and the floor of the nasal cavity
Two parts of the palate
- Hard palate in front
- Soft palate behind
What is the hard palate formed by?
**UNDERLINED
- THE PALATINE PROCESSES OF THE MAXILLAE
- THE HORIZONTAL PLATES OF THE PALATINE BONES
How and where is the mucosa adhered in the hard palate?
- Tightly adhered
- To the underlying bone
What is the soft palate?
A mobile fold attached to the posterior border of the hard palate
The projection on the soft palate located at the posterior midline
Uvula
What is the soft palate continuous with at the sides?
The lateral wall of the pharynx
What makes up the soft palate?
- Mucous membrane
- Palatine aponeurosis
- Muscles
