Anatomy of the Neck pt. 2 Flashcards
What is the action of the suprahyoid muscles?
They elevate the hyoid bone and larynx
Where is the thyroid located in relation to other structures in the neck?
Starts lateral to the laryngeal prominence of the thyroid cartilage and extends to the 6th tracheal ring
Which artery supplies the thyroid gland?
The superior thyroid arteries
The inferior thyroid arteries (branch of the subclavian)
(sometimes the thyroid ima artery)
What is the most important nerve of the cervical plexus?
The phrenic (off C3,4,5)
What is the cervical plexus formed by?
The ventral rami of C1-4
What is the course of the external jugular vein in the neck?
Starts at the angle of the mandible and descends on the SCM
Where do you get commonly get abnormal thyroid gland growth?
Down its embryonic passage track
What is the course of the glossapharyngeal nerve in the anterior triangle of the neck?
It runs anteriorly after exiting the jugular foramen and giving off a branch to the carotid sinus
What is the name of the extra lobe that extends upwards in a thin strip?
The pyramidal lobe
How are the anterior vertebral (strap) muscles divided?
Suprahyoid - connect the hyoid to the skull
Infrahyoid - connect the hyoid to the trunk (sternum, clavicle, scapulae)
Which muscles does the investing layer of fascia envelope?
Trapezium
SCM
What is the action of the infrahyoid muscles?
They depress the hyoid
What is the contained in the visceral compartment of the neck?
Thyroid gland
Parathyroid gland
Thymus
Trachea
Oesophagus
Where does the internal jugular vein run?
Along the common and external carotid arteries
How do you differentiate CNXII from the other cranial nerves in the neck?
In comes from a different foramen and courses between the carotids and the internal jugular vein
Where is the recurrent laryngeal nerve in relation to the thyroid gland?
Embedded in it
What are the veins of the superficial neck called?
The external jugular vein
The anterior jugular vein
Where does the thyroid develop?
The embryonic larynx
What vessels and nerves are contained in the posterior triangle?
Those of the upper limb - ie the brachial plexus
Vertebral arteries
Accessory nerve
What structures are endangered by enlargement of the thyroid gland?
The internal jugular veins
Tracheal
Oesophagus
Recurrent laryngeal nerve
What does the compartment of the neck communicate with inferiorly?
The mediastinum
Which fascia surround the visceral compartment of the neck?
Pretracheal
Buccopharyngeal
Between which fascia do the anterior vertebral muscle lie?
The investing fascia and pretracheal fascia
How many branches does the external carotid have?
6 before it splits into 2 terminal branches
