Anatomy of neural pathways Flashcards
What do corticobulbar tracts carry?
neuron fibres of cranial nerves (head and neck mainly)
What do corticospinal tracts carry?
neuron fibres of the trunk and limbs (spinal nerves)
Where in the brain is the motor cortex?
frontal lobe
Where in the brain is the sensory cortex?
parietal lobe
Do cranial nerves decussate?
generally, no
exception = cranial nerve IV
What are the 2 main general sensory pathways?
spinothalamic (anterolateral pathway)
dorsal columns
What tract deals with touch and pressure?
anterior spinothalamic tract
What tract deals with pain and temperature?
lateral spinothalamic tract
What senses do dorsal columns deal with?
fine touch
proprioception
vibration
What is the pyramidal pathway?
major motor system in the body
control of voluntary, discrete, skilled movements, spinal reflexes, muscle tone and can modulate sensory information
What tract affects limb muscles?
lateral corticospinal tract
What tract affects axial muscles?
anterior corticospinal tracts
What are the possible clinical presentations of spinal cord injury/pathology?
disassociated sensory loss (CNS)
pyramidal weakness (CNS)
Brown-Sequard syndrome
