Anatomy of a Tiny Habit Flashcards
What is the anatomy of the Tiny Habits Method?
The anatomy of the Tiny Habits Method is:
1. an Anchor Moment
2. a Tiny Behavior
3. an Instant Celebration
What is the Anchor Moment?
The Anchor Moment is an existing routine or action in your life that will prompt you to do the new tiny behavior.
We use the word Anchor because we’re attaching a new behavior to something you already do consistently, something solid and stable in your life.
Example: If you brush your teeth every day, then brushing your teeth could be your prompt to do the new behavior of flossing. You’re anchoring a new bahavior to something you already do consistently.
What is a Tiny Behavior?
A Tiny Behavior is the new bahavior you want to create in your life, scaled back to be easy enough to do that you will consistently do it.
If reading is the new habit you want to create in your life, the Tiny Behavior might be opening the book.
If drinking more water is the new habit, the Tiny Behavior might be putting a water glass on your desk when you walk in your office.
The secret is to make the Tiny Behavior as small as it needs to be for you to consistently do it no matter how busy you are.
What Is Celebration?
Celebration is something you do right after you do the new Tiny Behavior to create a positive feeling inside yourself that we call “shine.”
Firing off positive emotions actually create habits by stimulating the release of “feel good” chemicals in the brain, making you want to do that behavior again. The better you become at Celebrating, the quicker you will create habits. The trick is to make yourself feel genuinely happier or uplifted in some way.
