Anatomy Lab 3 Cytology Flashcards
This double membrane organelle is responsible for the production of ATP or cellular energy
Mitochondria
This non-membranous organelle is a tiny round organelle that may be free within the cytoplasm or fixed on a specific membranous organelle. It is responsible for the production of proteins.
Ribosome
This membranous organelle consists of a series of flattened plate like disks. It is responsible for the synthesis and packaging of cellular secretion.
Golgi apparatus
This membranous organelle consists of a series of tubules with ribosomes attached which are responsible for the production and packaging of proteins.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
These membrane-bound vesicles are produced by the Golgi apparatus. They contain strong and acidic digesting enzymes responsible for the breakdown of damaged organelles or phagocytized pathogens.
Lysosomes
This membranous organelle consists of a series of tubules responsible for the production and packaging of lipid and steroids.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
This membranous organelle is the largest organelle of the cell. It is the control center of the cell and it contains genetic material and a nucleolus.
Nucleus
This non-membranous structure forms the cytoplasmic framework of a cell. It consists of numerous non-membrane-bound organelles (microtubules, microfilaments, etc)
Cytoskeleton
This non-membranous organelle is composed of paired cylindrical bodies composed of microtubules. It is responsible for chromosome movement during cell division.
Centriole
This is a series of long plasma membrane extensions that have the ability to beat rhythmically to propel substances along the cell surface
Cilia
This is a series of tiny plasma membrane extensions used to increase the cells surface area for absorption.
Microvilli
This membranous organelle is a membrane-bound vesicle that contains oxidative enzymes that function to break down fatty acids and ethanol (alcohol).
