Anatomy Lab 2 Whole Body Overview Flashcards
Name the eleven organ systems
Integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive
Put these levels of structural organization in order from least complex to most complex: tissue level, organism level, chemical level, system level, cellular level, organ level
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organism
Flexion
Reduction in angle (close arms)
Extension
Increase in angle (open arms)
Hyperextension
Double-jointed or extending beyond normal
Abduction
Moving away from the midline (lifting arms)
Adduction
Moving toward midline such as putting hands to side and legs together
Horizontal adduction
Both arms straight out in front of you and together
Horizontal abduction
Both arms out and open, like asking for a hug
Circumduction
Movement in all planes with your limbs, such as small arm circles
Rotation (medial/lateral)
This is the movement of your forearm. for medial you can see top of the arm moving the thumb toward the midline and for lateral you can see the bottom of the arm
Supination
Palms up, arms straight out in front
Pronation
Palms down, arms straight out in front
Plantarflexion
Standing on tippy toes and flexing sole of the foot
Dorsiflexion
Toes pointing upward, standing on heels
Elevation
Moving shoulders up
Depression
Moving shoulders down
Inversion
Sole of feet facing toward midline
Eversion
Sole of feet facing away from midline
Protraction
Clavicle forward (trying to make shoulders touch in the front)
Retraction
Clavicle backward (trying to touch shoulders in back)
Opposition
Thumb touching pinky
Reposition
Open hand/ thumb back to normal
What color are the arteries and what is their function?
Red, carry blood away from the heart
What color are veins and what is their function?
Blue, carries blood to heart
What is the function of capillaries?
To connect arteries and veins
General function of integumentary system
Protection from environmental hazards; temperature control
General function of the skeletal system
Support and protection of soft tissues; mineral storage; blood formation
General function of muscular system
Locomotion, support, heat production
General functions of nervous system
Directing immediate responses to stimuli, usually by coordinating activities with other organ systems
General functions of endocrine system
Directing long term changes in the activities of other organ systems
General functions of cardiovascular system
Internal transport of cells and dissolved materials including nutrients wastes and gases
General functions of lymphoid system
Defense against infection and disease
General function of respiratory system
Delivery of air to site where gas exchange can occur between the air and circulating blood
General functions of digestive system
Processing of food and absorption of organic nutrients minerals vitamins and water
General functions of urinary system
Elimination of excess water salt and waste products; also controls pH
General functions of reproductive system
Production of sex cells and hormones
