Anatomy Chapter 3 Histology Flashcards
What are the 5 characteristics of epithelial tissue?
- Found in continuous sheets
- High mitotic rate
- Avascular
- Shows polarity (top/apical & bottom/basal)
- Underlain by the Basal Lamina (aka Basement Membrane)
The two main divisions of the epithelial tissue are:
Covers surfaces/lines cavities, & glandular tissue with secreting cells
What are the 4 functions of epithelial cells?
Physical protection, controls permeability, provides sensation, produces specialized secretions
What are the 2 types of glands in the glandular epithelium? Whats the difference between the 2?
Exocrine Glands(have ducts), Endocrine Glands(no ducts)
What are the 3 modes of secretion?
Holocrine (cell dies), apocrine (apical surface breaks apart and empties into duct), merocrine (exocytosis/sweat)
What are the general functions of connective tissue?
Structure, transports fluid throughout body, protection fir body organs, connecting/surrounding tissues, energy storag and blood cell formation, defense from microorganisms
Which tissue is the most abundant?
Connective tissue
What are the 4 characteristics of connective tissue?
- specialized cell + extracellular matrix
- Matrix=ground substance + fibers (protein)
- Matrix varies from fluid (blood) to gel to solid
- Nerve supply + blood supply (usually)
What are the 3 fibers of connective tissue?
Collagen fibers, elastic fibers, reticular fibers
What are the 5 specialized cells of connective tissue?
- Fibroblasts
- Adipocytes
- Blood Cells
- Chondrocytes
- Osteocytes
Describe collagen fibers
Largest fiber, 3 protein subunits twisted like a rope, flexible, on tendons and ligaments
The 3 types of connective tissue
Connective tissue proper (loose and dense ct), supporting connective tissue (bones/cartilage), Fluid connective tissue (blood/lymph)
What are the 4 characteristics of muscle tissues?
- Elongated cells (fibers)
- Cells packed with contractile proteins
- Highly contractile
- Sensitive to external environment changes
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
Smooth, skeletal, cardiac
Skeletal Muscle:
- Striated?
- Shape?
- # of nuclei and location
- Voluntary or involuntary?
- Can it divide?
- Striated
- Very large cylindrical fibers
- Multiple, peripheral nuclei
- Voluntary
- Can’t divide
