Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear Flashcards

1
Q

Three Divisions of the Ear

A
  • Outer–> outside to ear drum

The ear’s functions

A
  • Transducer–> changes energy into a different form

- Maintainer of equilibrium (balance)

Q

EAM

A
  • Shaped: s-shaped
  • 7mm in diameter
  • 2.5 cm long
  • 1/3 cartilage, 2/3 bone

Q

Cerumen

A
  • ear wax
  • Keeps canal moist
  • Inhibits the formation of bacteria
  • Prevents insects from entering
  • Cleans the canal

Q

Microtia

A

Grade 1: smaller than normal, but the ar has mostly normal anatomy
Grade 2: Par of the ear looks normal (usually lower half), the canal may be normal, small, or completely closed
Grade 3: “peanut-shaped”; no canal
Grade 4: Complete absence of both the external ear and the ear canal also called “anotia”

Q

Eustachian tube

A

1) Connects middle ear with pharynx
2) 36mm long
3) Usually collapsed, but opens during yawning, chewing, and swallowing
4) Aerates middle ear
5) Equalizes pressure

16
Q

3 mazes and 2 functions of inner ear

A
  • Vestibule
  • Cochlea: hearing
  • Semi-circular canals: Balance
17
Q

Cochlea

A

3 canals (ducts):

  • scala vestibuli (Perilymph)
  • scala media (Endolymph)
  • scala tympani (Perilymph)
18
Q

Semi-circular Canals

A
  • Superior (anterior): connected to the coronal plane (senses movement forward and backwards)
  • Lateral (horizontal): connected to the transverse plane (senses motion up and down)
  • Posterior: connected to the sagittal plane (connects left and right motion)
  • Function: helps with maintaining balance, vision and proprioception
