ANATOMY - Abdominal Wall Flashcards
What are the five main layers of the body wall?
Skin
Cutaneous trunci muscle
Superficial fascia
Muscle covered by deep fascia
Peritoneum
What are the three methods of attachment of muscle to bone?
Directly
Tendons
Aperneurosis
What are tendons?
Tendons are ropes of deep fascia that attach muscle to bone
What are aperneuroses?
Aperneuroses are sheets of deep fascia that attach muscle to bone
What is the linea alba?
The linea alba is a band of fibrous tissue running from the sternum, along the ventral midline, to the pubis
What is the name of the muscle which lies either side of the linea alba?
Rectus abdominus muscle
What are the three layers of muscle which make up the lateral abdominal wall?
External abdominal oblique muscle
Internal abdominal oblique muscle
Transverse abdominus muscle
In which direction do the fibres of the external abdominal oblique muscle run?
Caudoventral fibres
In which direction do the fibres of the internal abdominal oblique muscle run?
Cranioventral fibres
In which direction do the fibres of the transverse abdominus muscle run?
Dorsoventral fibres
What is the inguinal canal?
The inguinal canal is a passage in the lower abdominal wall
What are the two components of the inguinal canal?
Superficial inguinal ring
Deep inguinal ring
In which muscle would you find the superficial inguinal ring?
The superficial inguinal ring is found in the external abdominal oblique muscle
In which muscle would you find the deep inguinal ring?
The deep inguinal ring is found in the internal abdominal oblique muscle
What is the vaginal tunic?
The vaginal tunic is an out-pouching of peritoneum running through the inguinal canal
